What Age Is Best for a Cake Smash Session? A Surrey Parent's Guide

You have been planning the first birthday party, ordering the custom cake, and picking the perfect outfit — and now you are wondering: when exactly should I book a cake smash photography session? And is my baby old enough? Or too old?

The Ideal Age for a Cake Smash Session

The sweet spot for cake smash photography is 11 to 13 months old. Here is why:

At 11 to 12 months, most babies can sit up confidently and independently, which makes posing much easier. They are curious enough to explore and interact with the cake, but not yet strong enough to throw it across the studio (usually). They have not developed strong food preferences or aversions yet, so they will generally engage with any flavoured cake.

At 13 months, babies are often taking their first steps, which creates adorable standing and walking shots around the cake setup. If you want those wobbly-first-steps photos incorporated into your session, waiting until 12 to 13 months can be worth it.

Can I Book a Cake Smash Before 11 Months?

Yes, with some adjustments. Babies between 9 and 11 months can do beautiful cake smash sessions, but they may need more support for sitting poses and may be less likely to dig into the cake on their own. We use posing supports and parent-assisted poses to create the same look safely.

If your baby's birthday falls during a busy season — especially summer, when our Surrey studio books up quickly — booking a cake smash session 2 to 4 weeks before the actual birthday is very common and the results are identical.

Can I Book a Cake Smash After the Birthday?

Absolutely. Life gets busy around the first birthday, and we regularly photograph first birthday sessions for babies who are 13, 14, or even 15 months old. The photos are just as beautiful, and frankly, slightly older babies often make for more entertaining smash sessions because they are more confident and more expressive.

We would not recommend going much past 15 months for a traditional cake smash setup, as older toddlers tend to be more opinionated about what they want to do — but every baby is different, and we work with whatever age your child is.

Do I Need to Bring the Cake?

Yes — we ask families to provide their own smash cake for the session. This is because cake preferences and dietary needs vary so widely (nut allergies, dairy-free, vegan, specific flavours) that it is safer and simpler for you to source the cake from a bakery of your choosing.

The cake should be simple — a single-tier round or square cake, unfilled, with minimal structural decoration. Elaborate tiered cakes do not smash as naturally or safely. Many of our Surrey clients order from local bakeries and are happy to share their recommendations — just ask when you book.

We provide all other props, backdrop setups, themed decorations, balloons, and styling as part of your session at no extra charge.

What Happens After the Smash?

We always plan for a bath or cleanup after the cake smash portion of the session. Our Surrey studio has a sink and cleanup area. Bring a full change of clothes, a towel, and wipes. Many families also bring a slightly nicer outfit for post-smash portraits — some of our sweetest photos are the clean, happy baby after the smash with cake still in their hair.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For first birthday cake smash sessions in Surrey, we recommend booking 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Peak times — especially May, June, September, and October — fill several months ahead. If your baby's birthday falls during a busy month, book as soon as you know the approximate date.
