Surrey Maternity Photography — Studio vs Outdoor: Pros, Cons & How to Choose
One of the first decisions expecting moms make when planning their maternity photoshoot is where it will take place. At DIA Photo Studio in Surrey, BC, we offer both studio and outdoor maternity sessions — and the honest answer is that neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your personality, your pregnancy stage, the time of year, and the look you are going for.
Here is our complete guide to help you decide.
Studio Maternity Photography in Surrey
A studio maternity session takes place at our home-based studio in West Newton, Surrey. The environment is warm, private, and completely controlled — no weather concerns, no other people around, no timing pressure around golden hour.
Pros of a Studio Maternity Session
Available year-round — Studio sessions are available in every season and in any weather. This makes them the most reliable option for moms due in winter or early spring when outdoor conditions in Surrey are unpredictable.
Fully private — Our studio is a home-based space with no other clients coming and going. You have the entire studio to yourself for the duration of your session, which many moms find more relaxing and comfortable.
Largest gown collection in the Lower Mainland — We offer 25 stunning maternity gowns free to borrow, plus 10 premium fluffy gowns available for an additional $100 each. No other studio in Surrey or the surrounding area comes close to this selection. You can try multiple looks without any extra cost.
Consistent lighting — Studio lighting is controlled, flattering, and consistent regardless of time of day. You do not need to schedule around sunrise or sunset, and the results are predictable and beautiful.
More comfortable late in pregnancy — At 32 to 36 weeks, walking across a beach or through a park can be physically demanding. A studio session means you stay in one comfortable environment with a chair nearby at all times.
Better for bump-focused images — Studio sessions with minimal, clean backdrops tend to produce the most timeless, bump-centred images — the kind you will want to frame and hang on a wall.
Cons of a Studio Maternity Session
Less variety of backgrounds — You are working within one space, which means the variety of your images comes from outfit changes, prop changes, and lighting variations rather than location changes.
Can feel less natural for some moms — If you are someone who feels more like yourself outdoors and finds studio environments a bit formal, you may feel more relaxed in a natural setting.
Outdoor Maternity Photography in Surrey
Surrey and the surrounding Lower Mainland offer some of the most beautiful outdoor maternity photography locations in BC. Our most popular spots include Crescent Beach in South Surrey, White Rock Beach, Bear Creek Park, Tynehead Regional Park, and Deas Island Regional Park in Delta.
Pros of an Outdoor Maternity Session
Natural light — Outdoor golden hour light — the hour before sunset — is genuinely magical for maternity photography. It is warm, soft, and flattering in a way that is very difficult to replicate in a studio.
Beautiful natural backdrops — Surrey and South Surrey offer beaches, forests, parks, and waterfront settings that create a wide variety of looks within a single session.
Feels more relaxed for some moms — If you spend a lot of time outdoors or find natural settings more comfortable than studio environments, you will likely feel more like yourself in an outdoor session.
Great for couples and movement — Outdoor sessions lend themselves naturally to walking shots, candid moments, and partner interaction that feels genuine rather than posed.
Cons of an Outdoor Maternity Session
Weather dependent — Surrey weather in spring and fall can be unpredictable. We always have a reschedule policy for outdoor sessions, but it can add complexity to scheduling around your due date.
Limited wardrobe options — You are responsible for your own outfit for outdoor sessions. While we can offer guidance, we do not bring our full gown collection on location.
Time-sensitive — The best outdoor light lasts roughly 45 to 60 minutes around golden hour. Sessions need to be timed carefully, which means less flexibility on arrival time.
More physically demanding — Walking on sand or uneven ground at 30 to 34 weeks requires more energy than a studio session. Most moms manage this comfortably, but it is worth considering.
Which Is Better at Different Stages of Pregnancy?
28 to 30 weeks — Either option works beautifully. You are showing well but still comfortable enough for outdoor walking. This is a great window for outdoor sessions.
30 to 33 weeks — The sweet spot for both options. Your bump is at its most photogenic and you are still comfortable in most environments.
33 to 36 weeks — We lean toward studio at this stage for most moms. The physical comfort and convenience of staying in one place is a significant advantage as you get closer to your due date.
36 weeks and beyond — Studio is almost always the better choice. We want you to be completely comfortable, and the controlled environment of our Surrey studio makes that much easier.
Can You Do Both?
Yes — and many of our clients do exactly that. Our Bump to Baby package allows you to combine a maternity session with your newborn session, and some clients choose to do a studio maternity session and then return for outdoor family portraits after baby arrives. Ask us about extended session options when you book.
Our Honest Recommendation
If you are unsure, start with a studio session. The wardrobe options, the comfort, the year-round availability, and the consistent results make it the safer choice for most moms. If you have a specific outdoor location in mind that is meaningful to you — a beach you love, a park where you got engaged — then an outdoor session may produce images that are more personally significant.
Either way, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, unhurried, and confident. That is what produces beautiful maternity photographs — not the location.
