How to Prepare Your Toddler for a Newborn Session at Our Surrey Studio

One of the most common concerns we hear from parents booking a newborn session at DIA Photo Studio in Surrey is: "We have a toddler. Is that going to be a problem?" The short answer is absolutely not — in fact, some of our most cherished newborn portraits include a big sibling's tiny hand wrapped around baby's fingers.

But toddlers do require a little preparation. Here is everything we have learned from photographing hundreds of families as a baby photographer in Surrey, BC.

Talk to Your Toddler About the Baby Before the Session

In the days leading up to your newborn photography session in Surrey, talk to your toddler about what will happen. Keep it simple and positive: "We are going to take some special pictures of you and the new baby." Show them photos of newborn sessions online — even from our Instagram or gallery — so they have a visual idea of what to expect.

Avoid building it up too much or putting pressure on their performance. Children respond to calm, matter-of-fact explanations far better than excited hype that can create anxiety.

Time the Session Around Your Toddler's Best Hours

When booking your Surrey newborn session, consider your toddler's typical daily schedule. Most toddlers are at their best in the mid-morning — after breakfast and before the pre-nap grumpiness kicks in. We always photograph sibling portraits at the beginning of the session while big brother or sister still has their best energy and patience.

Let us know when you book if your toddler has a strict nap schedule so we can plan accordingly.

Bring a Second Adult If Possible

This is our single most practical tip for families with toddlers: bring a grandparent, a close friend, or another trusted adult whose only job is to be with the toddler during the session.

Once the sibling portraits are done — which usually takes 10 to 15 minutes at the start — your toddler will naturally lose interest in being still and quiet. A second adult can take them for a walk around our West Newton neighbourhood, sit with them in the waiting area with a snack and a tablet, or simply keep them occupied while you enjoy the rest of the newborn session.

Pack a Toddler Survival Kit

Bring a small bag with your toddler's favourite snack (something not too messy), a drink, a comfort item or small toy, and a tablet or phone pre-loaded with their favourite show or game. The goal is not to bribe them — it is to make the experience positive and give them something enjoyable to do when it is not their turn in front of the camera.

Keep the Morning Low-Key

On the day of your Surrey newborn session, avoid scheduling anything stressful or exciting for your toddler before you arrive. No playgroup, no errands, no sugar-heavy breakfast. A calm morning leads to a calmer toddler in the studio.

Let Us Take the Lead

As your baby photographer in Surrey, we have worked with hundreds of toddlers of all temperaments. We know how to make it fun, quick, and low-pressure for big siblings. We use gentle prompts, lots of positive reinforcement, and we never force a pose. If your toddler is not in the mood for a hug shot, we find a different approach — maybe looking at baby from behind, or holding a single finger, or just standing nearby with a proud expression.

Some of the most moving sibling portraits we have ever captured happened when we stopped asking the toddler to pose and simply let them be themselves near their new baby.

What to Dress Your Toddler In

Simple, comfortable clothing in neutral tones photographs best. Avoid bold patterns, logos, or anything your child finds uncomfortable or restrictive. Soft blues, creams, dusty pinks, and greys all work beautifully. Coordinate loosely with whatever the parents are wearing without being too matchy-matchy.
